The major source of acid rain is industry. Industry produces it by burning fossil fuels. When fossil fuels are burned, they release sulphur dioxide (SO2) and nitrogen oxides (NOX) into the atmosphere. SO2 also comes from factories, coal power plants, oil refineries and mills, and NOX is released from vehicles, powerplants and fertilizers. Once these gasses are in the atmosphere, they combine with water and oxygen to form sulphuric acid and nitric acids.
